Infrastructure Grants
Infrastructure grants are available to fund engineering projects related to Safe Routes to School (SRTS). These projects alter the built environment making it easier and safer for students to walk and bike to school. The types of projects eligible for construction with infrastructure grants funding include sidewalks, bicycle facilities, pedestrian signals, crosswalks, and pedestrian-scale lighting to improve safety.
In Virginia, SRTS infrastructure projects are funded through the Transportation Alternatives (TA) Set-Aside program. The application and award process is managed by VDOT's Local Assistance Division.
Due Dates
TA Set-Aside grant applications are accepted every other year. Tentative application deadlines are:
- Pre-application deadline -- June 30, 2023 *MANDATORY*
- Full application deadline – October 2, 2023
Eligibility
Many different types of organizations may apply for TA funds, however applicants should have experience administering federal grants and using the SMART Portal system. The most common eligible sponsors are local governments, regional transportation authorities, and transit agencies. Natural resource or public land agencies, schools and school districts and tribal governments are also eligible. See the links below for more information.
