STAUNTON – (4 a.m.) The first week of 2022 ends much as it began – with slick driving conditions throughout the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. An overnight winter storm brought 3 to 6 inches of snow to the region. Snowfall has tapered off in most areas by early Friday morning, but most roads in the region have patches of snow or ice for the morning commute.

The Virginia Department of Transportation advises motorists to monitor road and weather conditions at http://www.511Virginia.org and delay travel until conditions improve.

VDOT employees and contractors throughout the 11-county Staunton District are working around the clock on rotating 12-hour shifts to plow and treat roadways. Here are the conditions as of 4 a.m. Friday:

Interstate 64 – Minor conditions in Alleghany and Rockbridge counties. Clear conditions in Augusta County.

Interstate 66 – Minor conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Minor conditions in Rockbridge and Rockingham counties. Clear conditions in Augusta County.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Highland, Frederick and Clarke counties. Minor conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah and Warren counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.

For winter weather road conditions go to http://www.511Virginia.org, look at the orange bar on the top of the page and click on “Text Views” and then click on “Road Condition Table”. Look at the pull down box that lists all jurisdictions. In this box individual counties can be chosen to view.

Road condition definitions:
Severe – drifting or partially blocked road.
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
