GIVE INPUT ON VDOT STUDY REVIEWING PORTIONS OF FRONT ROYAL PIKE IN FREDERICK COUNTY

STAUNTON – The public is invited to participate in a brief online surveys available February 21 to March 7. This study is being conducted by the Virginia Department of Transportation in partnership with Frederick County and the Winchester-Frederick County Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Public feedback is being sought on a transportation study assessing potential improvements on Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) between Route 50/17 (Millwood Pike) at I-81 Exit 313 and Costello Drive. Participants will be asked to weigh in on current issues and concerns related to the corridor as it is configured today, then asked to rate the study team’s recommendations.

The focus of this study is to assess potential safety and operations improvements along the corridor, particularly at the intersections of Route 50/17, Route 522, and I-81 Exit 313, and Route 522 and Costello Drive. Other needs being reviewed include multimodal accessibility and transportation demand management opportunities, such as the addition of a park and ride. The study seeks to recommend solutions where appropriate to improve upon these needs, which were identified in the Virginia Statewide Transportation Plan, VTrans: https://www.vtrans.org/

This study will investigate mid-term (10-25 year) solutions to address operational and safety needs. The Route 50/I-81 Exit 313 interchange bridge replacement will add roadway capacity and reduce delays, but may not be sufficient to handle anticipated traffic from emerging developments in the vicinity. A long-term (25-30 year) concept involving relocating Route 522 to the east is being investigated through a separate WinFred MPO study. The study examines the segment of Route 522 from Costello Drive to Delco Plaza and the intersection of Route 522 and Route 50 intersection.

Study materials include a presentation and executive summary, as well as an online survey available through March 7, 2022.

Community input received through this survey will help the study team further refine and finalize potential improvements. The study partners may consider the recommendations for possible advancement through future local, regional, state and federal transportation funding programs.

This study is being conducted as part of a new program, Project Pipeline, created by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). Project Pipeline is a performance-based planning program to identify cost-effective solutions to multimodal transportation needs in Virginia. Through this planning process, projects and solutions may be considered for funding through programs including SMART SCALE ( http://www.smartscale.org/ ) revenue sharing, interstate funding, and others.

Project Pipeline is led by Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI), in collaboration with VDOT and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

The Commonwealth is partnering with the Frederick County and the Winchester-Frederick County Metropolitan Planning Organization, to develop targeted improvements that minimize community impacts and address priority needs in a cost-effective way. The final plan will provide a multimodal investment strategy that can be used to seek and secure funding.
