STAUNTON – (4 a.m.) Subfreezing temperatures during the overnight hours have created slick spots on many secondary roads Monday morning in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. The Virginia Department of Transportation reports clear conditions on interstates and nearly all primary roads in the Staunton District. Minor conditions prevail on secondary routes in most counties, so motorists should be alert for patches of ice or snow. Bridges and overpasses may also have slick spots due to refreezing.

Sunday’s winter storm dropped 3 to 6 inches of snow to the region, with the highest snow totals in the southern Shenandoah Valley. Early Monday morning, VDOT crews are out monitoring conditions and treating roadways as needed.

The website http://www.511Virginia.org offers color-coded maps of road conditions as well as pavement temperatures and traffic cameras. Under the “Text Views” tab, the site provides county-by-county listings of road conditions on all types of state-maintained roadways.

Here are the road conditions as of 4:00 a.m. Monday in the VDOT Staunton District:

Interstate 64 – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.

Primary roads – Minor conditions on Route 11 and Route 42 in Shenandoah County, clear conditions on other primary routes. Clear conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Clarke County. Minor conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick and Warren counties. Clear conditions in Highland County.

Road condition definitions:
Severe – drifting or partially blocked road.
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
