STAUNTON – (4 a.m.) Overnight refreezing leaves patches of black ice or frozen slush on many roads in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. The Virginia Department of Transportation urges motorists to use caution during the Wednesday morning commute. Drivers should allow extra stopping distance, and plan to leave early so they can allow extra time to reach their destination.

VDOT crews and contractors have worked through the overnight hours to plow and treat roadways throughout the region. Travelers are encouraged to check 511Virginia.org for crash listings, road conditions and live camera feeds.

Here are the road conditions as of 4 a.m. Wednesday in the 11-county VDOT Staunton District:

Interstate 64 – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.

Primary roads – Minor conditions in Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties. Clear conditions in Alleghany and Bath counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Clarke and Warren counties. Minor conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Highland and Frederick counties.

Road condition definitions:

Severe – drifting or partially blocked road. 

Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway. 

Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
