VDOT News - Staunton

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley:  Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile marker 20 to 23, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for sign installations. March 25-April 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for inspection of bridge over CSX railway just north of Route 646 (Ross Lane). March 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting and pipe replacements. Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 638 (Natural Well Road) – Road closed for Jackson River bridge replacement between Route 687 (Jackson River Road) and Route 666 (East Morris Hill Road). Follow posted detour. Estimated project completion summer 2019.

Route 661 (Johnson Creek Road) – Closed between Route 600 (Indian Draft Road) and Route 781 (Rucker Gap Road) for slope repairs. Follow posted detour.

Route 3605 (South Durant Road/West Jackson Street), Covington – Road closed 24/7 through June 2 between Thacker Avenue and South Byrd Avenue for slope remediation. Follow posted detours.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting and pipe replacements. Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile marker 42 to 48, eastbound and westbound – Brief “slow roll” closures for utility work near mile marker 45. Sunday, March 24, between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. 

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile marker 174 to 177, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign installations, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 12. 

(UPDATE) Mile marker 174 to 203, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane or right shoulder closures for guardrail repairs at various locations, March 25-28 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Mile marker 176 to 179, northbound and southbound – Overnight lane and shoulder closures for bridge inspections over Route 692 and Cedar Creek. Through March 26 from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.

(NEW) Exit 180B, southbound – Exit closed for guardrail repairs 8 p.m. March 26 to 7 a.m. March 27. Detour exit 180A.

Mile marker 199 to 205, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign installations, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through March 29.

(NEW) Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Mobile shoulder closures for vegetation management between Route 752 (Hunter Hill Road) and Augusta County line, March 25-29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Route 60 (Midland Trail) – Mobile work zones with alternating lane closures for vegetation management between Route 702 (Quarry Lane) and Route 608 (Stuartsburg Road). March 25-29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs and brush cutting. Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) Exit 94, westbound – Off-ramp to Route 340 narrows for guardrail repairs, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Mile marker 94 to 95, eastbound and westbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for inspection of Route 340 overpass bridges, March 23-25 from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 95 to 98, eastbound and westbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for inspection of bridges over Norfolk-Southern railway, 7 p.m. March 24 to 7 a.m. March 25. 

INTERSTATE 81  
Mile marker 207 to 205, southbound – Right shoulder closures as needed for sign installations, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through March 29.

(NEW) Mile marker 216 to 217, northbound – Overnight right shoulder closure for guardrail repairs, 8 p.m. March 27 to 7 a.m. March 28.

(NEW) Mile marker 217 to 228, northbound and southbound – Mobile alternating lane closures for highway lighting maintenance. March 25-29 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mile marker 219 to 220, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closure for inspection of Route 647 overpass bridge, March 23-25 from 8p.m. to 9 a.m.

(NEW) Exits 220, 221 and 222, northbound and southbound – Overnight ramp closures for paving March 24-April 1. Signs and variable message boards in place with posted detour information. Shoulders closed 24/7 through April 15.

Mile marker 227 to 223, southbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder work, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through March 29.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 229 to 227, southbound – Alternating overnight lane closures for bridge work over Middle River, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through March 29.

(NEW) Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound– Right shoulder closures as needed for sign installations, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 5.

(NEW) Mile marker 235 to 236, northbound – Overnight right shoulder closure for guardrail repairs, 8 p.m. March 28 to 7 a.m. March 29.

(UPDATE) Route 250 (Shenandoah Mountain Drive) – Slope repairs between Route 716 (West Augusta Road) and Highland County line. Traffic controlled by flaggers and pilot trucks March through March 29 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Roadway width 10 feet. Road open to two-way traffic on weekends.

(NEW) Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Mobile work zones with shoulder closures between Route 613 (Spring Hill Road) and I-81 for vegetation management. March 25-29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Route 340 (Rosser Avenue) – Mobile, alternating lane closures for survey of Route 64 bridge. March 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 616 (Dam Town Road) – Flagger traffic control for roadway improvements between Route 777 (Knightly Lane) and Route 926 (River Bend Drive), 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through May 2019.

(NEW) Route 624 (Mount Torrey Road) – Flagger traffic control at Back Creek bridge for soil and rock testing, March 25-29 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Route 642 (Barrenridge Road) – Alternating lane closures for Rural Rustic Road improvements between Route 795 (Saint James Road) and Route 254 (Hermitage Road), 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through April 19.

Route 742 (Willow Spout Road) – Alternating lane closures for Rural Rustic Road improvements between Route 744 (Leaport Road) and Route 11 (Lee Highway), through March 29 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

(UPDATE) Route 753 (Nash Road) – Mobile lane closures as needed for Rural Rustic Road improvements between Route 42 (Scenic Highway) and Route 910 (Wampler Lane), through April 30 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

(NEW) Route 796 (Kiddsville Road, near Fishersville) – Road closed to through traffic April 1-25 for culvert replacement between Route 795 (Entry School Road) and Route 608 (Long Meadow Road).  Follow posted detours. Property owners will be able to access their homes/property.

(NEW) Various roads (Stribbling Springs Area) – Flagger traffic control for grading. March 25-29 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

(UPDATE) Various roads (Swoope area) – Pothole patching at various locations.  March 25-29 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile marker 237 to 253, northbound and southbound – Mobile work zones with right shoulder closures for survey work at various locations. March 25-26 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Mile marker 245 to 249, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign installations at multiple locations, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through March 29. 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Right turn lane closure for sidewalk installation. Work zone from Route 704 (Boyers Lane) to Route 687 (Massanetta Springs Road). March 25-26, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) –Right shoulder closures as needed for sign installations in Elkton area, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through March 29. 

SECONDARY ROADS 

(NEW) Route 921 (Lairs Run Road) – Occasional flagger traffic control for replacement of bridge over the North Fork Shenandoah River, just west of Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road). Estimated project completion September 2020. 

 

PAGE COUNTY 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 211 Business (West Main Street, Luray) – Road closed through June 2019 for replacement of Hawksbill Creek bridge. Follow posted detours.  

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 658 (Pass Run Road) – Lane closure with stop-and-proceed traffic pattern for maintenance on Pass Run bridge just west of Route 340. March 25-April 12 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 267 to 268, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures as needed for maintenance of Route 767 (Quicksburg Road) overpass bridge, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 19.

(UPDATE) Exit 279, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures along on- and off-ramps for bridge inspections, March 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 11 (Old Valley Pike, Strasburg area) – Mobile work zones with shoulder closures for vegetation management between Route 825 (Hite Lane) and Strasburg town limits. March 25-29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

SECONDARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 758 (Woodstock Tower Road) – Closed between Stagecoach Road and Woodstock Tower for slope and roadway repairs. Motorists can access mountain from east approach (Fort Valley).

(UPDATE) Route 767 (Quicksburg Road) – Flagger controlled traffic for maintenance of bridge over I-81. Through April 19 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for utility tree trimming. Monday to Friday during daylight hours.   

 

FREDERICK COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81

No lane closures reported. 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 37– Alternating lane closures for bridge inspection over Winchester & Western railroad near Kernstown. March 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 277 (Fairfax Pike, Stephens City) – Intermittent flagging and lane closures for utility/road widening work at Double Church Road intersection, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through October 1.

(NEW) Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) – Occasional lane closures for utility work from Route 645 (Airport Road) to Route 776 (Bufflick) Road, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 4. 

SECONDARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 644 (Papermill Road) – Flagger controlled traffic for right turn lane extension at Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) intersection, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 29.

Route 655 (Sulphur Springs Road) – Flagger controlled traffic as needed for roadway reconstruction between Route 50 (Millwood Pike) and Route 656 (Greenwood Road). Flagging may also take place on Route 656 near the intersection with Route 655. Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated project completion July 2020.

(NEW) Route 723 (Carpers Valley Road/Old Winchester Road) – Road closed through November for replacement of bridge over Opequon Creek at Frederick County line. Follow posted detour.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for utility tree trimming. Monday to Friday during daylight hours.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for utility tree trimming. Monday to Friday during daylight hours.  

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
