TRAFFIC ALERT FOR APRIL 1-5, 2019
Highway Work Zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley:  Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile marker 1 to 36, eastbound and westbound Off-ramp shoulder closures at various interchanges for litter pickup. April 1-12 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  

(NEW) Mile marker 7 to 36, eastbound and westbound – Mobile lane closures for sweeping of bridge decks and barrier walls. April 1-9 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  

(UPDATE) Mile marker 20 to 23, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for sign installations, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 19. 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 18 (Potts Creek Road) – Flagger controlled traffic for installation of pavement markers from Route 609 (Vine Patch Rod) to Covington city limits. April 1-2, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

(NEW) Route 220 (Madison Street, Covington) – Flagger controlled traffic for installation of pavement markers from Route 640 (Falls Road) to Covington city limits April 1-2, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting and pipe replacements. Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 638 (Natural Well Road) – Road closed for Jackson River bridge replacement between Route 687 (Jackson River Road) and Route 666 (East Morris Hill Road). Follow posted detour. Estimated project completion summer 2019.

Route 661 (Johnson Creek Road) – Closed between Route 600 (Indian Draft Road) and Route 781 (Rucker Gap Road) for slope repairs. Follow posted detour.

Route 3605 (South Durant Road/West Jackson Street), Covington – Road closed 24/7 through June 2 between Thacker Avenue and South Byrd Avenue for slope remediation. Follow posted detours.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting and pipe replacements. Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

 

BATH COUNTY 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 42 (Mountain Valley Road) – Flagger controlled traffic for installation of pavement markers from Alleghany County line to Route 39 (Maury River Road). April 3-4, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

(NEW) Route 220 (Hot Springs Road) – Flagger controlled traffic for installation of pavement markers from Alleghany County line Route 39 (Maury River Road). April 3-4, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.    

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting. Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

INTERSTATE 64

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 174 to 181, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign installations or repairs, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 19. 

(UPDATE) Mile marker 175 to 193, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane or right shoulder closures for guardrail repairs at various locations, March 31-April 5 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 175 to 205, northbound and southbound – Off-ramp shoulder closures for litter pickup at various interchanges. April 1-10 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

(UPDATE) Exit 180B, southbound – Overnight off-ramp closure for guardrail repairs from 8 p.m. April 2 to 7 a.m. April 3. Detour using exit 180A.

(NEW) Mile marker 198 to 199, northbound – Right shoulder closure for guardrail repair. April 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Northbound right lane closures for utility work from Northridge Lane to I-81 interchange. April 1-12 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

(NEW) Route 60 (Midland Trail) – Right shoulder closures for sign installations from Buena Vista city limit to Amherst County line. April 4 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

(NEW) Route 130 (Wert Faulkner Highway) – Right shoulder closures for sign installations from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 759 (Arnolds Valley Road). April 1-3 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

(NEW) Route 252 (Brownsburg Turnpike) – Flagger controlled traffic with a pilot truck for paving operations between Route 39 (Maury River Road) and Route 726 (New Providence Road), April 1-19 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

(NEW) Route 501 (Glasgow Highway) – Right shoulder closures for sign installations from Route 130 (Wert Faulkner Highway) to Amherst County line. April 1-3 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs and brush cutting. Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 631 (Old Buena Vista Road) – Road closed 7 a.m. April 3 to 7 p.m. April 4 for railway crossing repairs between Route 608 (South River Road) and Route 704 (Middle Road). Follow posted detour.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs and brush cutting. Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 213 to 236, northbound and southbound Off-ramp shoulder closures for litter pickup at various interchanges, April 1-6 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  

(NEW) Mile marker 216 to 236, northbound – Right shoulder closure for guardrail repairs at various locations, April 5 from 12 noon to 9 p.m.  

(UPDATE) Mile marker 217 to 228, northbound and southbound – Mobile alternating lane closures for highway lighting maintenance. March 31-April 7 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(UPDATE) Exits 220, 221 and 222, northbound and southbound – Overnight ramp closures for paving through April 5. Signs and variable message boards in place with posted detour information. Shoulders closed 24/7.

Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound– Right shoulder closures as needed for sign installations, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 5.

(NEW) Route 775 (Craig Shop Road) – Road closed April 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for pipe installation between Route 778 (Knightly Mill Road) and Route 774 (Cline River Road). Follow posted detours.

(NEW) Route 796 (Kiddsville Road, near Fishersville) – Road closed to through traffic April 1-25 for culvert replacement between Route 795 (Entry School Road) and Route 608 (Long Meadow Road).  Follow posted detours.

(NEW) Various roads (Mount Solon) – Flagger traffic control for grading. April 1-5 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

(UPDATE) Various roads (Swoope area) – Pothole patching at various locations.  April 1-5 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control for utility work between Route 732 (Coopers Mountain Road) and Route 613 (Whitmore Shop Road), 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through April 12. 

SECONDARY ROADS 

(NEW) Route 708 (Lynnwood Road) – Alternating lane closures for inspection of bridge over South Fork of Shenandoah River. April 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Route 921 (Lairs Run Road) – Westbound shoulder closure and occasional flagger traffic control for replacement of bridge over the North Fork Shenandoah River, just west of Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road). Estimated project completion September 2020.    

 

PAGE COUNTY 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 211 Business (West Main Street, Luray) – Road closed through June 2019 for replacement of Hawksbill Creek bridge. Follow posted detours.  

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 658 (Pass Run Road) – Stop-and-proceed traffic pattern for maintenance on Pass Run bridge just west of Route 340.  Through April 12 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81 

(NEW) Mile Marker 262 to 624, northbound – Overnight right shoulder closure for road maintenance, 8 p.m. April 3 to 7 a.m. April 4.

Mile marker 267 to 268, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures as needed for maintenance of Route 767 (Quicksburg Road) overpass bridge, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 19.

(NEW) Exit 298, southbound – Ramp shoulder closure for road maintenance, April 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 55 (Front Royal Road) – Alternating lane closures for bridge inspection over North Fork of the Shenandoah River at Warren County line.  April 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 758 (Woodstock Tower Road) – Closed between Stagecoach Road and Woodstock Tower for slope and roadway repairs. Motorists can access mountain from east approach (Fort Valley).

Route 767 (Quicksburg Road) – Flagger controlled traffic for maintenance of bridge over I-81. Through April 19 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for utility tree trimming. Monday to Friday during daylight hours.   

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

Route 277 (Fairfax Pike, Stephens City) – Intermittent flagging and lane closures for utility/road widening work at Double Church Road intersection, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through October 1.

Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) – Occasional lane closures for utility work from Route 645 (Airport Road) to Route 776 (Bufflick) Road, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 4. 

SECONDARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 644 (Papermill Road) – Overnight flagger traffic control for right turn lane extension at Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) intersection, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. through April 5.

Route 655 (Sulphur Springs Road) – Flagger controlled traffic as needed for roadway reconstruction between Route 50 (Millwood Pike) and Route 656 (Greenwood Road). Flagging may also take place on Route 656 near the intersection with Route 655. Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated project completion July 2020.  

Route 723 (Carpers Valley Road/Old Winchester Road) – Road closed through November for replacement of bridge over Opequon Creek at Clarke County line. Follow posted detour.

Route 607 (Rocky Lane) –Daytime flagger traffic control with occasional temporary road closures for Rural Rustic project between Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) and Route 649 (Browntown Road). Weekdays through late June.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for utility tree trimming. Monday to Friday during daylight hours.   

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
