RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation Chief Deputy Commissioner Rob Cary today announced that John Lynch has been selected as the agency’s new Northern Virginia District engineer, serving more than 2 million residents and leading the transportation program for state-maintained roads in Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William counties, and VDOT-supported highways in nine cities and towns.

Lynch led transportation projects in northern Virginia with VDOT for more than 10 years before serving as VDOT’s Culpeper District engineer. Before joining the Culpeper District in 2013, John served as the regional transportation program director for VDOT’s Northern Virginia Megaprojects office, responsible for providing on-time, on-budget and safe delivery of $5 billion in transformational projects, including serving as the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project manager.

“John is uniquely qualified for this role, and we are confident that he will bring unparalleled value to the region’s unique transportation system,” said VDOT Chief Deputy Commissioner Rob Cary. “His strong leadership on key D.C.-area megaprojects sets the stage for the successful delivery of the future transformation of northern Virginia’s multimodal transportation network.”

As Culpeper District engineer, John was accountable for VDOT’s construction, maintenance, project development and business functions for nine counties. Prior to joining the VDOT in 2003, John worked in the engineering private sector for more than 20 years.

John received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and completed a Master of Science degree in civil engineering from George Mason University. He is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia.
