WINTER WEATHER AND FREEZING TEMPS MAY IMPACT TRAVEL
VDOT encourages travelers to monitor local forecasts and conditions as commutes could be slippery

RICHMOND, Va. – We’re not through with winter weather just yet. Snow and colder temperatures are expected in portions of the Commonwealth beginning Thursday and stretching into Friday morning. Freezing temperatures following the storm could create icy conditions in affected areas as early as Thursday evening through the Friday morning commute. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are prepared and stand ready to treat roads when snow arrives, and motorists should be prepared to adjust travel as needed.

Winter weather driving tips:

  • Watch local forecasts and conditions before traveling.
  • No matter the forecast, if there is ice or snow on the road, travel is hazardous.
  • Give crews time to treat roads.
  • If traveling during adverse weather conditions:
    • Allow plenty of time to reach your destination
    • Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind the vehicle ahead of you
    • Brake very lightly to keep your tires from slipping on pavement
    • Do not pass snow plows
  • Visit 511virginia.org for the latest road conditions before traveling. If possible, avoid travel until precipitation stops and road conditions improve.
