RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) resumed full-service manned toll payment options at the Powhite Parkway Extension and the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge on Monday, June 8.  As we move into Phase Two of Virginia’s plan to ease public health restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, public expectations for such toll payment options have increased along with the region’s recent higher traffic volumes.

Electronic transactions remain available, and VDOT recommends motorists use electronic toll payment methods to reduce interpersonal contact, when possible. 

Safety precautions remain a priority amid concerns of the spread of COVID-19, and additional strategies have been implemented to protect the traveling public and VDOT employees. Collection facilities at the Powhite Parkway Extension and the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge have been fitted with transparent barriers at collection windows for additional separation between employees and drivers, and toll collectors will be outfitted with face coverings, gloves and hand sanitizer. Additional cleaning and disinfection procedures have also been implemented.

Virginia has 16 toll facilities throughout the state, of which four are VDOT-owned. All of these facilities accept toll payment through E-ZPass. In addition, there are several that also accept toll payment through license plate-tracked invoices.    

E-ZPass is the easiest and most convenient way to pay tolls and does not involve hand-to-hand contact. To obtain an E-ZPass, visit EZPassVA.com, or visit an E-ZPass retailer. The E-ZPass device is free. Temporarily, a new E-ZPass account requires only $20 to open, reduced from $35, in an effort to make it easier to get a transponder. As a reminder, the full $20 investment goes toward tolls.
