SALEM – Beginning Monday, March 14, drivers on Route 311 in Craig County can expect some traffic pattern changes due to work to replace the bridge over Meadow Creek.  The bridge is located near New Castle about 0.6 mile south of Route 311’s intersection with Route 42. 

Route 311 will be reduced to one lane at the bridge, and a temporary signal will be activated to allow traffic to alternate using the one open lane across the bridge. The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph in the work zone. A nine-foot width restriction will be in place on Route 311 over the bridge.  Drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time.

In addition, Route 646 (Allen Street) will be closed at its intersection with Route 311. Drivers can detour by using Route 665 (Kanawha Street) to Route 650 (Marshall Drive) onto Holcomb Avenue to access Allen Street.

The new bridge is expected to be completed with the signal and detour removed in mid-December 2022. There will be incidental work and seeding to take place in early 2023 with final completion in spring 2023.  

The bridge replacement contract is valued at $1.9 million. The Virginia Department of Transportation is administering the project, and A.R. Coffey and Sons from Buchanan is the contractor.
