VDOT News - Salem

SALEM – Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have been working since last night to plow or treat roads in western Virginia.  Interstates and primary roads (those numbered 1-599) are in clear to minor condition, which means there may be some isolated slick spots. 

Equipment operators are currently focusing on secondary roads and neighborhood streets (those numbered 600 and above) in those counties where snow accumulated. This is primarily in Craig, Giles and Montgomery counties and other locations in the higher elevations.

Drivers should not expect bare pavement on plowed secondary roads as cold temperatures are causing ice and packed-down snow to remain on portions of these road surfaces even when they have been plowed or treated. Crews will be placing abrasives to help with traction. Conditions on some secondary roads will not improve until temperatures rise above freezing.  Roads in the higher elevations and in cooler spots will have more packed-down snow.  

Drivers should be cautious as below-freezing temperatures can cause wet pavement to become icy.  Wind gusts may cause snow to drift and reduce visibility. To report downed trees or debris in roadways, call VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623) or visit online at my.vdot.virginia.gov. 

Crews will continue to monitor conditions overnight to address refreezing particularly on bridges, ramps and overpasses.

The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
