SALEM DISTRICT: CREWS WILL CONTINUE WORKING ON SECONDARY ROADS TONIGHT WHILE BATTLING DRIFTING SNOW
Roads will remain icy even when plowed due to frigid temperatures

SALEM – Equipment operators and contractors with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have been plowing and treating secondary roads and neighborhood streets (those numbered 600 and above) throughout the day and have made progress. VDOT crews will continue working on these roads in many areas into the overnight hours.

VDOT reminds citizens of the following:

  • VDOT reminds citizens of the following:Drivers will find that interstates and primary roads (1-599) are mostly clear with isolated slick spots. Below-freezing temperatures and drifting snow may create icy spots on these main roads, so motorists should still use caution, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and ramps and in shaded or cooler areas where ice can form first.
  • Equipment operators have worked on secondary roads and neighborhood streets and will continue overnight. Frigid temperatures mean that plowed or treated secondary roads or neighborhood streets will remain covered in a layer of ice or frozen snow until temperatures rise above freezing.
  • Gusty winds are causing snow to blow and drift, so equipment operators are returning to previously plowed primary roads or monitoring for cold spots. Visibility may be reduced at times.
  • To report debris, downed trees or other hazards on the roadway, call VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-367-ROAD (7623).
  • To check road conditions, download the 511 free mobile app or visit www.511Virginia.org

The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke.
