SALEM DISTRICT: DRIVERS SHOULD WATCH OUT FOR ICY ROADS ON MORNING COMMUTE
Refreezing and freezing rain overnight have created icy patches
SALEM - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is warning drivers to watch out for icy spots on roadways throughout western Virginia as low overnight temperatures have caused re-freezing of any moisture on roadways after yesterday’s winter weather event.
Freezing temperatures have caused icy patches to form on previously treated roadways. In addition, freezing rain has also created slick spots particularly counties in the New River Valley. Roads that appears wet may be icy this morning.
Drivers should:
- Drive carefully and use caution.
- Pay particular attention to coolers spots like bridges and overpasses and shaded areas.
- Clear the snow and ice from their vehicle’s roof, hood and trunk and especially from the windows, mirrors and lights.
Equipment operators worked on secondary roads and neighborhood streets (those numbered 600 and above) and have plowed most of these routes. Crews will continue to work on these routes today.
Travelers are reminded that they can get real-time information on road conditions and traffic incidents on Virginia roads by using VDOT’s 511 free mobile app or the www.511Virginia.org website and phone system.
The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
