TRAFFIC ALERT: ROUTE 116 DETOUR IN FRANKLIN COUNTY TO REMAIN IN PLACE FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND
Recent rains have slowed progress on repairs
SALEM – Drivers on Route 116 (Jubal Early Highway) in Franklin County should expect traffic to remain detoured during the Labor Day holiday weekend.
Repairs to a section of Route 116 in the Coopers Cove area that collapsed due to heavy rains have been ongoing since May.
The Virginia Department of Transportation had hoped contracted work would progress to be able to reopen Route 116 by Labor Day, but recent rains have delayed the paving and guardrail installation needed to safely reopen the roadway.
Weather permitting, Route 116 is now expected to reopen sometime in mid- to late September.
Route 116 is a two-lane road and both lanes are closed. The closure is located about 1.5 miles east of Route 1520 (Windridge Parkway) and 0.9 mile west of Route 681 (Coopers Cove Road).
Traffic is detouring around the closure using Route 678 (Truman Hill Road) to Route 635 (Edwardsville Road) to Route 681 (Coopers Cove Road).
