SALEM DISTRICT: VDOT CREWS DEPLOYED FOR WEDNESDAY’S WINTER WEATHER EVENT

SALEM – Winter weather is forecasted to impact portions of southwestern Virginia tomorrow morning and at this time, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews have been deployed throughout the district.

As wintry precipitation begins and temperatures continue to fall, road conditions could change rapidly. With several slick roads reported this evening, particularly in the eastern area of Bedford County, crews are currently applying abrasives on the roadway to assist with icy road conditions.

Drivers should monitor local forecasts and avoid travel, if possible, until this weather event ends. If travel is necessary, motorists should use caution, reduce their speed, avoid making sudden stops or quick maneuvers, and keep a safe distance between vehicles and trucks that are plowing the road.

Real-time information on road conditions, traffic incidents and congestion on Virginia roads is available using VDOT’s 511 free mobile app or the www.511Virginia.org website and phone system.  Follow us on Twitter at @VDOTSalem or on Facebook  on our VDOT Salem District group page.

VDOT’s Customer Service Center is open 24 hours a day to answer questions and take reports of roadway hazards at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or online at www.virginiadot.org.
