SALEM — On Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a public hearing to discuss a project to improve safety at the intersection of Route 834 (Brooks Mill Road) and Route 670 (Burnt Chimney Road) in Franklin County. The hearing will be held at Burnt Chimney Elementary School located at 80 Burnt Chimney Road in Wirtz.

The hearing was previously scheduled for July 30, but it has been rescheduled to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

The design public hearing is being held to provide an opportunity for citizens or organizations to give input on the project and will be held in an “open-house” format with no formal presentation given. VDOT representatives will be present to discuss the project and answer questions.

The project would improve safety and traffic flow at the Route 834 and Route 670 intersection by constructing a roundabout, realigning the roadway to provide better sight distances, and providing better access management for development.

The new roundabout would be a physical measure that would reduce the risk of angle collisions, minimize the risk of vehicles failing to stop, and help improve operations as vehicles proceed more efficiently through the intersection.
