VDOT SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON ROUTE 220 MARTINSVILLE SOUTHERN CONNECTOR STUDY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT AT HEARING ON AUGUST 15
Public invited to comment on VDOT’s recommendation on the preferred alternative

SALEM — On Thursday, August 15, from 5 to 7 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a public hearing for the Route 220 Martinsville Southern Connector Study Environmental Impact Statement at Drewry Mason Elementary School, located at 45 Drewry Mason School Road in Ridgeway.

In February 2018, VDOT, in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), initiated the Route 220 Martinsville Southern Connector Study, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that evaluates potential improvements to the Route 220 corridor in Henry County between the Route 58/Route 220 Bypass and the North Carolina state line.

The hearing will be an open house format and provide an opportunity for the public to discuss the study with VDOT representatives and provide input on the preferred alternative. The hearing will include a video presentation that will run throughout the evening.

Following the public hearing and action by the Commonwealth Transportation Board, FHWA will publish the EIS. The publication of the EIS will be announced to the public and there will be another opportunity to review materials online or at a future public hearing tentatively scheduled for January 2020.

Comments may be submitted at the hearing, on the study website at www.virginiadot.org/martinsvilleconnector, by e-mail to Martinsville220@VDOT.Virginia.gov or by mail to Scott Smizik, project manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 1401 East Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219. Comments will be accepted through August 25, 2019.

Anyone requiring special assistance to attend and participate in the hearing may contact VDOT’s Salem District Office at 540-387-5353, 800-367-7623 or TTY/TDD 711.
