VDOT SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON MARTINSVILLE SOUTHERN CONNECTOR STUDY AT MEETING ON JANUARY 23
Study to evaluate improving Route 220 corridor in Henry County
SALEM — On Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a Citizen Information Meeting for the Martinsville Southern Connector Study. The meeting will be held at Drewry Mason Elementary School at 45 Drewry Mason School Road in Ridgeway.
VDOT in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has initiated the Martinsville Southern Connector Study, an Environmental Impact Statement that will evaluate potential alternatives for future improvements along the Route 220 corridor in Henry County between the Route 58/Route 220 Bypass and the North Carolina state line.
VDOT will hold the January meeting to solicit input on preliminary options that are being considered and update the public on the status of the study. The meeting will be an open-house format with VDOT representatives present to discuss the project and answer questions.
The options that are being considered and presented at the meeting have been guided by an online survey that VDOT conducted last fall. Between Sept. 10 and Oct. 10, 2018, VDOT received 775 survey responses. The responses helped identify needs for the study to address. The options will be on display at the meeting and available on the study web site at www.virginiadot.org/martinsvilleconnector before and after the meeting.
Following the meeting, VDOT and its partner agencies will identify the alternatives that will be advanced for detailed study. These advanced alternatives will be further analyzed so that impact and cost estimates can be documented. VDOT will seek additional public comment later this year before identifying a preferred alternative that will be included in the Environmental Impact Statement.
Comments can be submitted at the Citizen Information Meeting, by mail to Scott Smizik, Project Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 1401 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219, by email to Martinsville220@VDOT.Virginia.gov, or on the study website. Comments will be accepted through February 2, 2019.
Anyone requiring special assistance to attend and participate in this meeting can contact VDOT’s Salem District Office at 540-387-5353, 800-367-7623 or TTY/TDD 711.
