SOUTH CHESTERFIELD, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Richmond District crews have largely wrapped up plowing and treating operations from Sunday’s snow storm. However, forecasts indicate that possible snow flurries are on the way tonight and into Tuesday morning.

Crews will continue monitoring routes for slick spots and treating them with salt and sand overnight Monday, focusing on interstates, primary routes and key secondary routes. Brining materials and residual salt from Sunday’s storm will also be effective to reduce slick spots during Tuesday’s morning commute. Crews will remain mobilized on state maintained routes until conditions are safe and chances for ice have lessened. Cities and towns provide their own snow removal.

Tips for drivers

Roads remain wet in many locations following weekend weather, which means that slick spots cannot be ruled out until temperatures rise or pavement dries. Use extra caution during the Tuesday morning commute, allow more time to reach your destination and leave a five second gap between yourself and other vehicles. VDOT trucks will be on the move treating routes; avoid passing them or following too closely.

VDOT’s Richmond District oversees snow removal activities on approximately 19,000 lane miles of roads in 14 counties in central Virginia: Amelia, Brunswick, Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico (primary routes only), Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, New Kent, Nottoway, Powhatan and Prince George counties. Henrico County provides snow removal for their secondary roads (numbered 600 and above) and subdivision streets.
