CREWS CONTINUE TO ADDRESS HIGH WATER IN CENTRAL REGION
More than 40 roads have reopened since Saturday

SOUTH CHESTERFIELD – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Richmond District crews continue work to address high water in the central Virginia region and reopen roads where possible. Since Saturday, August 15, over 40 roads have been reopened as crews removed debris water receded.

As of 2 p.m. Monday, August 17, 11 roads were still closed in the VDOT Richmond District, most of which are located in Chesterfield and Prince George counties where rain totals were the highest. Most roads are under final inspection and are expected to reopen today or within 2-3 days, weather permitting. The following roads will require long-term repairs and detours are in place until further notice:

  • Spring Run Road (Route 654) over Third Branch in Chesterfield County
  • Heritage Road (Route 635) over Mike Run in Prince George County

As water continues to recede and final inspections are made, crews will be reopening roads once they are determined safe for travel. Barriers and signage are in place to alert drivers of current closures. Drivers are urged not to move or drive around road closure barriers, cones, barrels or signs, as closed roads have not yet been determined safe for use. Motorists should also avoid driving through any amount of standing water on the road, as unseen hazards may be below the water’s surface.

Anyone with questions can call VDOT’s Customer Service Center any time at 800-367-7623 (FOR-ROAD) or https://my.vdot.virginia.gov/.
