SOUTH CHESTERFIELD—To ease traffic flow and reduce the amount of angle crashes within the intersection, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will soon begin work to install a modular roundabout at Otterdale Road and Hampton Park Drive in Chesterfield County. Work is expected to begin in spring 2020, once pre-made materials are delivered.

“Drivers are appropriately concerned about safety at the intersection,” said VDOT Chesterfield Resident Engineer Kyle Bates, P.E. “The modular roundabout design is expected to reduce severe crashes that result in expensive vehicular damage, injuries and loss of life. Safety is always VDOT’s first priority and crews will jump into action to install the roundabout once materials are in hand.”

Modular roundabouts are quick and simple to install, allowing crews to bolt down pre-made pieces over a period of weeks, rather than the longer timelines required for permanent roundabout installation. In addition to materials being bolted in place, new pavement markings will be in place to direct traffic through the roundabout.

The intersection of Otterdale Road and Hampton Park Drive is one of three intersections in VDOT’s Richmond District proposed to receive a modular roundabout treatment. A public meeting was held in August 2019 to share visuals of the proposed roundabouts and collect public feedback.
