SOUTH CHESTERFIELD — Beginning this week, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin work on a $35 million improvements project at the interchange of Interstate 64 and Airport Drive (Route 156) in Henrico County. Work will include the full replacement of two bridges on I-64 east and west over Airport Drive, along with increased vertical clearance on Airport Drive.

Additionally, the existing full cloverleaf interchange will be converted to a partial cloverleaf interchange to eliminate traffic merging onto Airport Drive from I-64 and increase efficiency. Loops B and D (see image) will be removed. New, signalized median crossovers on Airport Drive will be constructed to facilitate this interchange reconfiguration. 

During construction, two through lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction of I-64.

“Benefits for this project are threefold,” said Shane Mann, P.E., Richmond District Construction Engineer. “Along with new, long-lasting structures, overheight vehicles will be better accommodated beneath I-64 and motorists accessing or traveling near the Richmond International Airport will experience a safer, more efficient ride.”

Weather permitting, work is expected to be complete in late 2022.
