Temporary Relocation of Exit from I-66 West to Route 28 South Begins on or about April 21
Temporary exit is approximately one-half mile east of (prior to) current exit; Overnight lane, ramp closures required on I-66 West April 20-21 to implement change
UPDATE (4/21): This work will occur tonight, with the new ramp opening on Friday morning, April 22
FAIRFAX – The exit from I-66 West to Route 28 South will be temporarily relocated approximately one-half mile prior to (east of) the current exit ramp on or about Thursday morning, April 21. Westbound vehicles heading to Route 28 South will exit about one-quarter mile west of the new exit to Route 28 North that opened last month. This temporary exit to Route 28 South will be in place for approximately two weeks as construction at the I-66/Route 28 Interchange advances as part of the Transform 66 Outside of the Beltway Project.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled to the night of Thursday, April 21, if inclement conditions occur.
To implement this traffic pattern change, drivers should expect the following, weather permitting:
Wednesday, April 20 (Thursday, April 21, will be used as backup)
I-66 West from west of Stringfellow Road to Route 28
- Two lanes will be closed from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. for crews to implement a traffic shift and ramp relocation.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South
- The ramp will be closed from midnight to 4 a.m. for crews to implement the traffic shift and ramp
- Traffic will be detoured farther west to the exit to Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 29 North, then follow signs to Route 28 South.
If drivers miss the new exit location, they can use the detour route to reach Route 28 South by exiting to Route 29 Centreville, turning left to exit to Route 29 North, then following signs to Route 28 South.
Drivers should always use caution and pay attention to lane markings and roadway signs in construction zones.
The new Route 28/I-66 Interchange will improve traffic flow on I-66 and Route 28, and provide access to and from the future I-66 Express Lanes. The I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes, which span from I-495 to Route 29 in Gainesville, are expected to open in December 2022.
