FAIRFAX – Overnight lane closures and traffic stoppages on I-66 East and West near Route 50 in Fairfax are planned  this week, Thursday, March 17, through Saturday, March 19, for bridge beam installation for the new Waples Mill Road Bridge over I-66. The bridge is being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers traveling on I-66 during this time should expect delays and consider using alternate routes.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

Details include:

  • I-66 East will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Waples Mill Road from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

The Waples Mill Road Bridge over I-66 is being rebuilt to accommodate the widening of I-66. The new bridge will include a shared-use path and sidewalk, with nearby connection to the new shared-use path being built along I-66. Bridge construction and demolition are being done in phases to keep the bridge open for traffic during this process.
