VDOT News - Northern Virginia

FAIRFAX – Northbound I-495 will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching I-66 during the overnight hours this Friday, August 26, and Saturday, August 27, for the installation of overhead bridge beams. The beams are needed to widen the ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North for connections from the future I-66 Express Lanes. The ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North will also be closed both nights in conjunction with this work. In addition to these closures, the northbound 495 Express Lanes will be closed on Friday night to accomplish this work, which is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers traveling on I-66 and I-495 during this time should expect delays and consider using alternate routes. 

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

Details include:  

Friday, August 26
Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North

• The ramp will be closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
• Traffic will be directed to I-495 South, exit to Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) East, stay to the right to Fairview Park, take the left fork to Fairview Park North, bear left at the traffic signal, stay to the right following signs to I-495 North.
• The ramp will reopen by 6 a.m.

I-495 North at I-66

• Two lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
• Between 10:30 p.m. and 6 a.m., a single travel lane will be open.
• All lanes will reopen by 8 a.m.

 495 Express Lanes North from Robinson Terminal (the beginning of the Express Lanes) to I-66

• All lanes will be closed from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 8 a.m.

Saturday, August 27
Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North

• The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
• Traffic will be directed to I-495 South, exit to Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) East, stay to the right to Fairview Park, take the left fork to Fairview Park North, bear left at the traffic signal, stay to the right following signs to I-495 North.
• The ramp will reopen by 8 a.m. 

I-495 North at I-66

• Three lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 8 a.m.

The I-66/I-495 Interchange is being modified with several new ramps and connections as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Improvements at the interchange include adding access to and from the existing 495 Express Lanes and the new I-66 Express Lanes, as well as building new connections between Express Lanes and general-purpose lanes.
