FAIRFAX – Crews will begin roadway striping and installation of flex post delineators on I-66 between Gainesville and Centreville as part of readying the new I-66 Express Lanes for opening. This work is planned to begin tonight, August 18, and will require lane closures to implement and result in traffic pattern changes to reach some I-66 exits.

Tonight’s work will begin with new roadway striping on I-66 West between Route 29 (Lee Highway) in Centreville and the Groveton Road overpass (located between Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) and Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway)) in the Manassas area. Multiple lanes will be closed during the overnight hours for multiple nights while crews stripe a double white line and a double yellow line separating the two left lanes (the future Express Lanes) from the future general-purpose lanes on the right side.

Following completion of striping, crews will begin installing flex posts in the striped area to separate the travel lanes. Drivers on I-66 West will need to stay to the right side of the flex posts to exit to Route 234 Business. All lanes (on both sides of the flex posts) will continue through and be able to exit to Route 234 Bypass, Route 29 in Gainesville, and points farther west. Flex post installation will require the closure of multiple travel lanes during the overnight hours for several nights.

After flex post installation is complete in this section of I-66 West, similar work will occur on I-66 East between Gainesville and Centreville.

Testing of overhead Express Lanes signs will also begin during August, but tolling will not occur until the I-66 Express Lanes open. During this field testing, drivers should expect to see flashing lights on the overhead gantries and test messages on the new electronic toll signs.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled or extended to the following night(s) if inclement conditions occur. Drivers should pay attention to lane markings and roadway signs in construction zones.
