Extended Left Lane Closure, Travel Impacts Planned on I-66 East from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 29 Centreville Beginning on or about Tuesday, June 14, for I-66 Express Lanes Final Paving
Drivers should plan ahead and expect possible delays

FAIRFAX – Drivers should expect possible delays on I-66 East due to an extended closure of the left lane between Route 29 (Lee Highway) in Gainesville and Route 29 in Centreville beginning on or about Tuesday, June 14. This section of eastbound I-66 will be reduced to three travel lanes, with the left lane (HOV lane) closed around-the-clock, for approximately six days. Additional lane closures will occur in this area during overnight hours. These lane closures will allow crews to complete this section of roadway paving for the future I-66 Express Lanes Outside the Beltway. Extending the single lane closure for multiple days will enable crews to work more efficiently, reducing traffic impacts from additional paving during the coming months.

Drivers traveling on I-66 East during this time should plan ahead, expect delays, and consider adjusting travel plans and/or routes if possible. All work is weather dependent and schedules may be adjusted if inclement conditions occur.

What Drivers Should Expect:

Tuesday, June 14, through Monday, June 20
I-66 East between Route 29 Gainesville and Route 29 Centreville

  • Starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, the left lane of I-66 East will be closed near Route 29 in Gainesville (prior to University Boulevard). Crews will work their way east toward Route 234 Business (Sudley Road), closing additional portions of the left lane as paving operations advance.
  • Starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 16, crews will close the left lane of I-66 East at Route 234 Business and progress eastward to Route 29 Centreville over approximately four days.
  • Three travel lanes will remain open during peak periods.
  • During the overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, a second lane will be closed, leaving two lanes open for travel.
  • The left lane closure will remain in place around-the-clock once set until the end of the paving operation.

How Travelers Can Stay Informed:

Following the paving of the eastbound Express Lanes, crews will begin final paving for the future Express Lanes along I-66 West in early July. An estimated one million tons of asphalt will be laid in 2022 as part of the final paving for the new Express Lanes and general-purpose lanes on I-66 Outside the Beltway between Route 29 in Gainesville and the I-495 Interchange.

The left lane of I-66 East between Route 29 in Gainesville and Route 29 in Centreville is planned to close beginning Tuesday, June 14, for about six days for extended paving operations as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Additional lane closures will occur during overnight hours.
