Demolition of Old I-66 Ramp Retaining Walls at Stringfellow Road to Continue This Weekend, February 11-14, During Daytime and Overnight Hours
Stringfellow Road North reduced to one lane, ramps to I-66 East/from I-66 West to be closed; Stringfellow Road ramps also closed Wednesday night, Feb. 9

FAIRFAX – Demolition of the old barrier and retaining walls along the I-66 ramps at Stringfellow Road will continue this weekend, February 11-14, during the daytime and overnight hours. For crews to safely perform this work, the I-66 ramps to and from Stringfellow Road will be closed beginning at 10:30 p.m. Friday, February 11, continuously through 5 a.m. Monday, February 14. Stringfellow Road North approaching I-66 will also be reduced to a single travel lane during this period. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

In addition, the I-66 ramps to and from Stringfellow Road will be closed tonight, Wednesday night, February 9, from midnight to 4 a.m.

Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area and consider using alternate routes. 

What Neighbors Should Expect:

  • Crews will continue to remove the old barrier along the I-66 East ramp, and begin demolition of the retaining walls adjacent to the I-66 ramps at Stringfellow Road. This work will occur during both the daytime and overnight hours, beginning Friday night, February 11, continuously through Monday morning, February 14.
  • Demolition of the old barrier and retaining walls involve breaking up the old concrete using jackhammers, saw cutters, and hoe rams.
  • Work is anticipated to require 10-12 nights of demolition activity to complete.
  • All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
  • Information about traffic impacts and demolition progress will be posted on outside.transform66.org/stringfellow.

What Drivers Should Expect:

Wednesday night, February 9
Ramp from I-66 West to Stringfellow Road
Ramp from Stringfellow Road to I-66 East

  • The ramps will be closed tonight between midnight and 4 a.m. 

Friday, February 11, through Monday, February 14
Ramp from I-66 West to Stringfellow Road
Ramp from Stringfellow Road to I-66 East

  • The ramps will be closed for demolition of the old I-66 bridge abutments and retaining wall beginning at 10:30 p.m. on Friday, February 11, continuously through 5 a.m. Monday, February 14.
  • The ramps will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Stringfellow Road North between Westbrook Drive and Fair Lakes Boulevard

  • Stringfellow Road North will be reduced to a single travel approaching the I-66 overpass for demolition of the old I-66 bridge abutments and retaining wall beginning at 10:30 p.m. Friday, February 11, continuously through 5 a.m. Monday, February 14.
  • All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Demolition Progress to Date:

  • Crews completed demolition of the old I-66 bridge decks over Stringfellow Road in November 2021.
  • Demolition of the old bridge abutments and the old barrier along I-66 West was completed during the weekend of February 4, 2022.

The I-66 bridges over Stringfellow Road are being widened to accommodate the new I-66 Express Lanes and provide room for any future mass transit along I-66.
