VDOT News - Northern Virginia

FAIRFAX -- VDOT Northern Virginia crews continue to clear and treat roads overnight, for both some additional wintry precipitation as well as refreeze from low temperatures.

Drivers are asked to continue to limit travel if possible, or to use extreme caution and be aware of the potential for slick pavement, even where surfaces appear clear or were previously treated.

What's Happening Now

A Winter Weather Advisory covering the Northern Virginia District remains through 6 a.m. Friday, with potential for an additional layer of snow, sleet or ice.

Interstates, primary routes, and other heavily traveled roads are mostly clear and wet. Some secondary routes and lower-volume roads may be slick and slush- or snow-covered.

Overnight, VDOT crews will continue to treat for refreeze and push accumulated slush and snow, and tree crews remain on call to respond to downed trees or broken limbs.

Reminders for Residents Thursday Night and Friday:

In neighborhoods, crews treat trouble spots with a salt/sand mix, and in areas where more than two inches have accumulated, plows make an 8' -to-10' path. Learn more.

If possible, avoid overnight and early morning travel until after sunrise and temperatures improve. Temperatures will remain below freezing, causing potential icy conditions and black ice.

If you drive, allow extra time. Clear vehicles completely of ice. Take the trip slowly, increase distance behind other vehicles, and brake gently. Use extra caution on elevated surfaces such as bridges, ramps and overpasses.
