Updated Schedule for Route 28 Bridge Beam Installation: Overnight Full Closures Of I-66 in Centreville Area Planned August 4-6 and 9
Detours will be posted for I-66 and ramp closures
FAIRFAX – I-66 East and West will close nightly August 4-6 and 9 to allow for installation of bridge beams for a new Route 28 South bridge over I-66. I-66 East will close at Route 29 (Lee Highway) during the overnight hours Wednesday and Thursday, August 4-5. I-66 West will close at Route 28 the nights of Friday, August 6, and Monday, August 9. Multiple I-66 ramps to/from Route 28 and Route 29 will also be closed during these nights. The Route 28 Interchange is being rebuilt as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
The I-66 East detour will direct drivers to Route 29 North, then to Route 28 North to return to I-66 East. The I-66 West detour will reroute drivers via Route 28 North, Westfields Boulevard, and Route 28 South to return to I-66 West.
Drivers traveling on I-66 during this time should expect delays and consider using alternate routes.
- I-66 East will be closed at Route 29 in Centreville from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night.
- All traffic will be directed to exit at Route 29, stay to the right to Route 29 North, travel about one mile to Route 28 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
- All lanes will reopen by 4 a.m.
- The spur ramp to southbound Route 29 will be closed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night.
- Traffic will be directed to stay to the right to Route 29 North, then stay to the left and make a U-turn from the left-most left turn lane at the Centrewood Drive/Trinity Parkway traffic signal onto Route 29 South.
- The ramp will be closed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night.
- Traffic will be directed to exit at Route 29 North (prior to the closure), travel about one mile and follow signs to Route 28 North.
- The ramp will be closed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night.
- Northbound Route 29 traffic will be directed farther north to Route 28 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
- Southbound Route 29 traffic will be detoured farther south, stay to the left and make a U-turn at O’Day Drive onto Route 29 North, travel about one mile to Route 28 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
- I-66 West will be closed at Route 28 Friday night from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., and Monday night from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
- All westbound I-66 traffic will be directed to exit at Route 28 North, continue north to the Westfields Boulevard West exit, stay to the right to Route 28 South, then follow signs to I-66 West. Drivers traveling to Route 28 South will follow the same detour -- Westfields Boulevard West to Route 28 South.
- The ramp to Braddock Road/Walney Road from I-66 West will remain open.
- All lanes will reopen by 4 a.m. Saturday and 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.
