Route 7 Eastbound Nighttime Traffic Shift in Leesburg Oct. 5
Update: New eastbound turn and auxiliary lanes at Cardinal Park Drive set to fully open to traffic in late October

Update: The eastbound Route 7 traffic shift is in place, with the turn lane to Cardinal Park Drive and auxiliary lane from Cardinal Park Drive to the Battlefield Parkway off-ramp partly open to traffic. Drivers can expect the turn lane and auxiliary lane to be fully open later this month.

LEESBURG – On Tuesday night, Oct. 5, weather permitting, eastbound Route 7 (East Market Street) traffic will be shifted to the right between the Leesburg Bypass (Route 15) and Battlefield Parkway, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Lane closures will occur on eastbound Route 7 leading up to the traffic shift between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6. Once the shift is in place, a new turn lane from eastbound Route 7 (East Market Street) to Cardinal Park Drive and a new auxiliary lane on eastbound Route 7 from Cardinal Park Drive to the Battlefield Parkway off-ramp will open to traffic. The turn lane will make it easier for eastbound Route 7 drivers to access Cardinal Park Drive, while the auxiliary lane will make it easier for Cardinal Park drivers to merge onto eastbound Route 7. Eastbound Route 7 traffic between the Leesburg Bypass and Battlefield Parkway will be shifted to the right for about a month.

In June, the new interchange at Route 7 and Battlefield Parkway, including a new auxiliary lane on eastbound Route 7 from the Battlefield Parkway on-ramp to the River Creek Parkway/Crosstrail Boulevard off-ramp, opened to traffic. Also, the traffic signal at Route 7 and Cardinal Park Drive was removed and the Route 7/Cardinal Park Drive intersection was converted to a permanent right-in/right-out configuration.

Construction will continue through November to finish the remaining elements of the project, including constructing a shared-use path along northbound Battlefield Parkway, a sidewalk along southbound Battlefield Parkway, pedestrian signals and lighting.

The posted speed limit along Route 7 will continue to be reduced to 45 miles per hour between the Leesburg Bypass and River Creek Parkway until construction is complete.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.
