Route 28 South Shifts to New Bridge Over I-66 on/about Night of October 13
Remainder of current Route 28 South Bridge over I-66 to be demolished following traffic shift
FAIRFAX – Route 28 South will be shifted to a new bridge over I-66 on or about Wednesday night, October 13. The new alignment for Route 28 South is slightly west of the existing southbound crossing over I-66. The I-66/Route 28 Interchange is being rebuilt at part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled to Thursday night, October 14, if inclement conditions occur.
To implement this shift the following closures will occur on Wednesday night, October 13:
I-66 East and West between Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville and Stringfellow Road
- Three lanes of I-66 approaching Route 28 will be closed in both directions from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for overhead bridge work.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Route 28 South from Old E.C. Lawrence Park Entrance to Route 29
- Two lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for crews to implement the traffic shift.
- All lanes will reopen on the new bridge span by 5 a.m.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
- Traffic will be detoured farther west to the exit to Route 29 Centreville, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 29 North, then follow signs to Route 28 South.
- The ramp will reopen by 4 a.m.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 East
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
- Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 29 North, stay to the right to Route 28 North, then follow signs to I-66 East.
- The ramp will reopen by 4 a.m.
Ramp from Braddock Road/Walney Road to Route 28 South
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
- Traffic will be detoured to Westfields Boulevard to reach Route 28 South and I-66 East.
- The ramp will reopen by 4 a.m.
Following this traffic pattern change, the current Route 28 South Bridge over I-66 will be demolished to allow construction of additional ramps and bridges at the I-66/Route 28 Interchange. Demolition of the current bridge is anticipated to begin on or about October 15 and will occur during daytime hours, when possible. Demolition of bridge sections over I-66 must occur during overnight hours when traffic lanes can be closed for the safety of the traveling public. Additional information about demolition and traffic closures will be provided through advisories and website updates prior to these overnight activities.
Drivers traveling through the interchange on Route 28 should be alert for changing traffic patterns. Construction-related detours and traffic pattern changes will continue through 2022 as crews rebuild the Route 28 Interchange to improve traffic flow on I-66 and Route 28, and provide access to and from the future I-66 Express Lanes. The I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes, which span from I-495 to Route 29 in Gainesville, are expected to open in December 2022.
Construction and lane closure updates are available at Transform66.org and on Twitter @VaDOTNOVA.
