Overnight Lane Closures and Traffic Stoppages on Route 29 (Lee Highway) Near I-66 and Washington Boulevard in Arlington Planned March 25 and 26 for Traffic Signal Work
Work is part of the I-66 Inside the Beltway Eastbound Widening Project
FAIRFAX -- Alternating single lane closures and 20-minute traffic stoppages are planned during the overnight hours on Route 29 (Lee Highway) North and South at the intersections of Fairfax Drive and Washington Boulevard in Arlington, near I-66, on Thursday, March 25, and Friday, March 26, for traffic signal work.
Drivers are urged to use caution and expect possible delays while these closures are being implemented.
Details include:
Route 29 North and South at the intersections of Fairfax Drive and Washington Boulevard
Thursday, March 25, and Friday, March 26
- Single lane closures between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. (9 a.m. on Saturday)
- Drivers should expect two or more traffic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. (9 a.m. on Saturday)
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled to Monday night, March 29, if inclement conditions occur.
The I-66 Inside the Beltway Eastbound Widening Project has added a new travel lane along four miles of I-66 East between the Dulles Connector Road and Exit 71 (Glebe Road/Fairfax Drive), and installed approximately 12,000 linear feet of new and replacement noise barriers. The project has also constructed a new bridge on the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail over Route 29 -- a heavily traveled portion of the trail between Arlington and Falls Church. The project also includes constructing a new direct access ramp from eastbound I-66 to the West Falls Church Metrorail Station at the Leesburg Pike (Route 7) Interchange using two existing ramps -- eastbound I-66 to Route 7, and the eastbound I-66 collector-distributor road adjacent to the station’s parking garage. The ramp connection is expected to open in spring 2021.
The project began in June 2018 and is being built by Lane Construction Corporation of Chantilly under a design-build contract.
