Overnight Lane Closures and Traffic Stoppages on I-66 West and Route 50 East in Fairfax Next Week for Overhead Bridge Work at the I-66/Route 50 Interchange
FAIRFAX – Bridge beam installation for the new Route 50 East Bridge over I-66 will require lane closures and stoppages on I-66 West and on Route 50 East next week during the overnight hours Sunday, January 10, through Friday, January 15, as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area during these times and should consider using alternate routes.

Sunday, January 10, through Friday, January 15
I-66 West from Waples Mill Road to Route 50
- I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane approaching Route 50 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
- Drivers should expect periodic brief stoppages of up to 10 minutes on westbound I-66 between midnight and 4 a.m.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Route 50 East from West Ox Road to I-66
- Route 50 East will be reduced to one travel lane approaching I-66 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
- Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes on eastbound Route 50 between midnight and 4 a.m.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Ramp from Route 50 West to I-66 West
- The ramp from westbound Route 50 to I-66 West will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. nightly.
- Traffic will be detoured farther west to West Ox Road South, stay to the right for Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
Message boards on I-66 West and Route 50 are providing advance notice of lane closures and traffic stoppages.
The I-66/Route 50 Interchange is being rebuilt to add Express Lanes access to and from the east and to construct a new shared-use path as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
