Overnight Full Closures of I-66 West at I-495 Next Week for Continued Overhead Bridge Work
Ramps from I-495 North to I-66 West, 495 Express Lanes South to I-66 West will also be closed; Overnight lane closures, stoppages on I-66 West planned for May 12-13
UPDATE (5/12): In addition to the below traffic impacts, brief stoppages of traffic are planned on the ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West during the overnight hours of Wednesday, May 12, and Thursday, May 13, from midnight to 4 a.m. for overhead bridge work.
FAIRFAX – Nightly lane closures, ramp closures, and traffic stoppages will be needed next week on I-66 West at I-495 Monday, May 10, through Saturday, May 15, as bridge beam installation continues at the I-66/I-495 Interchange as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
Work planned for Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights will require all lanes of I-66 West approaching I-495 to be closed with a detour in place using Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) and I-495. The ramps from I-495 North to I-66 West and from the 495 Express Lanes South to I-66 West will also be closed those nights. On Tuesday and Wednesday nights, westbound I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane with multiple 20-minute traffic stoppages.
Drivers traveling on I-66 and I-495 during this time should expect delays and should consider using alternate routes.

Monday, May 10; Tuesday, May 11; Friday, May 14; and Saturday, May 15
I-66 West at I-495
- All I-66 West travel lanes at I-495 will be closed Monday and Tuesday nights from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.; Friday night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.; and Saturday night from 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- All westbound I-66 thru-traffic will be directed to exit the interstate at Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) West, travel about one mile to the ramp to I-495 South, and then follow signs to I-66 West.
- The ramp from I-66 West to I-495 South will remain open.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. (6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday).
Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West
- The ramp will be closed Monday and Tuesday nights from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.; Friday night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.; and Saturday night from 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Traffic will be detoured farther north to Route 7 West, stay to the right to I-495 South, and then follow signs to I-66 West.
- The ramp will reopen by 5 a.m. (6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday).
Ramp from the 495 Express Lanes South to I-66 West
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. (6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday).
- Overhead variable message boards in the Express Lanes will direct traffic to an alternate route.
Wednesday, May 12, and Thursday, May 13
I-66 West at I-495
- I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching I-495 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes each night.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West
- The ramp will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West
- The ramp will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
The I-66/I-495 Interchange is being modified with several new ramps and connections as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Improvements at the interchange include adding access to and from the existing 495 Express Lanes and the new I-66 Express Lanes, as well as building new connections between express and general purpose lanes.
