Northern Virginia: Crews Staging for Snow Beginning Tonight
Residents asked to monitor forecasts for prolonged winter weather; plan ahead to avoid nonessential travel
FAIRFAX -- VDOT Northern Virginia crews are ready for a range of potential snowfall and wintry precipitation forecast across the district, beginning this evening and continuing in the coming days.
As always, residents are asked to track the latest forecasts, to plan ahead to avoid nonessential travel during winter weather, and to be aware of the potential for black ice and nightly refreeze as temperatures remain low.
What's Happening Now
See the Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service, with a range of snow accumulations forecast across VDOT's Northern Virginia District from 7 p.m. this evening to 10 a.m. Thursday. Monitor forecasts closely for updates.
Yesterday and overnight last night, crews pre-treated interstates and primary roads in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties, to help prevent ice and snow from bonding to the pavement at the onset of the event.
Through the evening, crews and about 2,300 trucks will be staged and ready to treat roads for ice and traction, and to plow snow where needed. Crews will begin to plow once two inches of snow have accumulated.
Reminders for Residents and Drivers:
Monitor the forecast closely and prepare to stay off roads when snowfall begins, to avoid deteriorating conditions and to allow crews room to work. Plan to avoid nonessential travel overnight Wednesday and early Thursday.
In areas that are expected to receive higher accumulations of snow, park in driveways or on a single side of the street to allow a wider path for plows.
If you must drive, ensure headlights are on, drive for the conditions, and be familiar with these winter driving tips.
