Northern Virginia: Be Alert to Black Ice, New Snow Bands During Morning Rush Hour
5 a.m. update: Monitor weather and delay Tuesday a.m. travel if possible
The Virginia Department of Transportation asks drivers to monitor weather closely, and delay nonessential travel through potential snow bands in Northern Virginia Tuesday morning.
What's Happening Now
The National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory covering VDOT's Northern Virginia District through has been has been expanded down the Interstate 95 corridor through 9 a.m. A band near the interstate may drop a coating to an inch or two of snow during the a.m. commute.
While interstates, primary roads, and heavily traveled secondary routes have been mostly clear and wet, new snow may recoat pavement quickly and create changing conditions. With sustained low temperatures, there will continue to be the potential for black ice.
More than 2,300 pieces of equipment will continue to push accumulation and retreat treating icy spots with salt and/or sand.
Key Reminders Tuesday:
Delay nonessential trips this morning. Previously plowed or treated roads may be recovered quickly, so give crews time to retreat and plow where needed.
Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle before driving. Turn on headlights, reduce speeds for the conditions and use extreme caution, especially on roads carrying less traffic, ramps, overpasses, hills, curves, turn lanes and crossovers.
Check road conditions and traffic cameras before leaving on www.511virginia.org, on the free mobile app, or call 511 in Virginia.
Crews have visited most lower-volume roads at least once, but continue to plow and treat trouble areas as needed. Residents can check the progress of plows in their neighborhood at www.vdotplows.org, and report hazards to my.vdot.virginia.gov or 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
