Nightly Lane Closures Continue on Route 7 at Battlefield Parkway in Leesburg
Work scheduled to prepare for interchange opening and removal of Cardinal Park Drive signal
LEESBURG – Drivers are asked to be alert to scheduled work and new traffic patterns coming as the new interchange at Route 7 (East Market Street) and Battlefield Parkway is prepared to open to traffic on Monday, June 28, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
With the interchange, Battlefield Parkway will reopen to traffic between Russell Branch Parkway and the Marketplace at Potomac Station shopping center entrance. This section of Battlefield Parkway has been closed since July 2020 to build the new grade-separated interchange that aims to relieve congestion and improve safety.
The traffic signal at Route 7 and Cardinal Park Drive will also be taken out of service and removed on June 28, making the intersection permanently a right-in/right-out configuration:
- Drivers heading to Cardinal Park Drive should access from eastbound Route 7, and drivers on Cardinal Park Drive must turn right onto eastbound Route 7.
- To access Cardinal Park Drive from westbound Route 7, drivers can use Battlefield Parkway and Trailview Boulevard.
Drivers can expect nightly lane closures along Route 7 in both directions to implement new traffic patterns related to both milestones:
- 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly through Thursday, June 24 : Up to two eastbound lanes closed
- 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly through Thursday, June 24: Up to two westbound lanes closed
- 9 p.m. Friday, June 25 to 9 a.m. Saturday, June 26: Up to two lanes eastbound and westbound
- 9 p.m. Saturday, June 26 to 8 a.m. Sunday, June 27: Up to two lanes closed eastbound and westbound
- 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly Sunday, June 27 and Monday, June 28: Up to two eastbound lanes closed
- 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly Sunday, June 27 and Monday, June 28: Up to two westbound lanes closed
The posted speed limit along Route 7 between the Leesburg Bypass and River Creek Parkway has been reduced to 45 miles per hour. Drivers are asked to use caution while traveling through the work zone.
After the interchange opens and the Cardinal Park Drive traffic signal is removed, construction crews will work to complete the final elements of the project, including auxiliary lanes on eastbound Route 7 between the Leesburg Bypass and Rivercreek Parkway/Crosstrail Boulevard, and shared-use path, sidewalk, pedestrian signals and lighting along Battlefield Parkway. The entire project is scheduled to be complete this fall.
