FAIRFAX--With Ice Storm Warnings expanded and hours of freezing rain still ahead, VDOT continues to advise against all unnecessary travel this afternoon and overnight.

The National Weather Service's Ice Storm Warning was expanded to include the Northern Virginia District through 7 a.m. Sunday morning, with two to three tenths of an inch of sleet and freezing rain forecast.

Road surfaces remain hazardous due to persisting precipitation and below freezing temperatures. Precipitation on even treated pavement can quickly refreeze.

Crews are applying treatment such as sand and salt on interstates, primary routes, main thoroughfares and trouble spots to help improve traction.

Tree crews are responding to remove limbs broken or hanging due to heavy ice, and to support utility companies with entangled or downed power lines.

Reminders for Drivers:

• Avoid unnecessary travel this evening and overnight. At below freezing temperatures, any precipitation on the road will make travel hazardous and crews will need room to work.
• Monitor road conditions from home on www.511virginia.org or the free mobile app, or call 511 from any phone in Virginia.
• If you absolutely must drive: Allow plenty of additional time to take the trip slow. Brake gently. Anticipate lane changes, turns and curves well in advance.
