Demolition of Old Gallows Road Bridge Piers Along I-66 West Continues During Overnight Hours December 17-18 and December 20-22

FAIRFAX – Demolition of the old Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 continues with demolition of bridge piers along I-66 West during overnight hours this weekend, Friday and Saturday, December 17-18, and next week, Monday through Wednesday, December 20-22. The Gallows Road Bridge is being replaced as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers traveling on I-66 during this time should expect delays and should consider using alternate routes.

What’s ahead for this Weekend and Next Week: 

  • During the overnight hours Friday and Saturday, December 17-18, and Monday through Wednesday, December 20-22, crews will demolish the two old bridge piers along I-66 West. This work will require the use of jack hammers, saw cutters, and hoe rams.
  • Demolition of the northside bridge abutment and approach continues during daytime hours.
  • No demolition activity is planned between December 23 and January 2.
  • Demolition of the old bridge deck over I-66 East is anticipated to begin during the overnight hours on or about Monday, January 3.
  • All work is weather dependent, and schedules may shift if inclement conditions occur.

What Drivers Should Expect:

Friday, December 17; Saturday, December 18; and Monday, December 20, through Wednesday, December 22
I-66 West from I-495 to Gallows Road

  • Three lanes will be closed Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and nightly Monday through Wednesday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • All lanes will reopen by 7 a.m. this weekend, and by 5 a.m. during the week.

Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West

  • The ramp will be reduced to one travel lane Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and nightly Monday through Wednesday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • All lanes will reopen by 7 a.m. this weekend, and by 5 a.m. during the week.

Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West

  • The ramp will be closed Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and nightly Monday through Wednesday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Overhead variable message boards will direct traffic to alternate routes. 
  • The ramp will reopen by 7 a.m. this weekend, and by 5 a.m. during the week.

Demolition Progress to Date:

  • Crews completed removal of the old bridge beams over I-66 West and the Dunn Loring Metrorail Station on December 15.

The Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 is being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridge is being lengthened, widened, raised, and shifted to the east to accommodate the new Express Lanes and provide room for future improvements along Gallows Road.

Crews finished beam removal over WMATA facilities on Wednesday night, December 15. With all beams now removed from the north side of the old bridge, crews have begun nighttime demolition of the two old bridge piers along I-66 West. (December 16, 2021)
