FAIRFAX – New ramps will open connecting Braddock Road, Route 28, and I-66 West between Saturday, November 7, and Monday morning, November 9, as part of continued traffic pattern changes happening at the I-66/Route 28 Interchange area for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Changes include:

• The ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West will be replaced by a new exit ramp approximately 1,000 feet north of (prior to) the old exit ramp.  
• Drivers on Braddock Road approaching Route 28 will use a new roadway and ramps to access I-66 West and Route 28 South. Drivers will turn right from eastbound Braddock Road, then stay left for the ramp to Route 28 South and I-66 East or stay right to merge onto the new ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West.
• The final traffic signal near the I-66/Route 28 Interchange, located on Route 28 South at Braddock Road, will be permanently removed on Monday night following the new ramp openings.

To implement these traffic pattern changes drivers should expect the following starting Friday night, November 6, weather permitting:

Temporary Closure of Braddock Road Between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28

• Around 9 p.m. Friday, November 6, Braddock Road will close between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28. Braddock Road traffic will not be able to turn onto Route 28 South. Drivers will be detoured to eastbound Westfields Boulevard to reach Route 28 South.
• This portion of Braddock Road will re-open later in the weekend when the connection to the new ramp to Route 28 South and I-66 West is complete. Braddock Road is expected to be opened by the early morning hours Sunday, November 8, or at the latest by 5 a.m. Monday, November 9.

Route 28 South from Westfields Boulevard and I-66
Friday, November 6, and Saturday, November 7: 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Sunday, November 8: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

• Two lanes on southbound Route 28 approaching I-66 will be closed nightly Friday, November 6, and Saturday, November 7, from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., and Sunday, November 8, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for crews to implement traffic pattern changes.
• All lanes will reopen by 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday morning, and by 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West
Friday, November 6, and Saturday, November 7: Midnight to 5 a.m.
Sunday, November 8: Midnight to 4 a.m.

• The ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West will be closed nightly Friday, November 6, and Saturday, November 7, from midnight to 5 a.m., and Sunday, November 8, from midnight to 4 a.m. for crews to implement traffic pattern changes.
• Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 29 South, travel about one mile and follow signs to I-66 West.
• Depending on weather and construction progress, the new ramp might open as early as Saturday morning and additional nights of closures and detours will not be needed.

Drivers should use caution and pay attention to lane markings and roadway signs when traveling in this area.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

In the coming weeks, drivers should expect additional changes at the I-66/Route 28 Interchange, including a new ramp from Route 28 North to I-66 East, the opening of the new overpass connecting Braddock Road and Walney Road, and new ramps from I-66 West and Route 28 North to the new Braddock Road/Walney Road overpass. 

The new Route 28 and I-66 Interchange will improve traffic flow on I-66 and Route 28 and provide access to and from the future I-66 Express Lanes. The I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes, which span from I-495 to Route 29 in Gainesville, are expected to open in December 2022.
