Overnight Ramp Closures at Multiple I-66 Interchanges Next Week for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project

FAIRFAX – Temporary ramp closures are scheduled to occur during the overnight hours next week at the I-66 interchanges at I-495, Nutley Street, Route 50, Route 28, and Route 234 (Prince William Parkway) for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. 

Details include:

Saturday, October 24
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 North
The ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 North will close around 11 p.m. Saturday, October 24, for crews to implement a traffic pattern change and open a new ramp. Traffic will be detoured temporarily to Route 28 South, travel to Route 29 (Lee Highway) North, then stay to the right for Route 28 North. Around 7 a.m. Sunday, October 25, a new ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 North will open about 150 feet east of (prior to) the old exit ramp. Drivers on I-66 West traveling to northbound Route 28 will stay to the right in an exit-only lane. Drivers traveling to Route 28 South from I-66 West will continue in the right-most through lane past the new Route 28 North exit to the current exit ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South.

Friday, October 23; Saturday, October 24; Monday, October 26; and Tuesday, October 27
Ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 East
The ramp will be closed Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. for bridge beam lifts and cross-framing installation. On Monday night, October 26, and Tuesday night, October 27, between midnight and 4 a.m. the ramp will be closed for crane de-mobilization. Drivers on Route 50 East will be directed farther east, stay to the left, and use the left-most turn lane to make a U-turn at Waples Mill Road. At the traffic signal, drivers will use the left-most turn lane only to make a U-turn onto Route 50 West, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.

Monday, October 26
Ramp from I-66 East to Nutley Street South
The ramp will be closed Monday night, October 26, between midnight and 4 a.m. for utility work. Traffic will be detoured to Nutley Street North, continue to the intersection with Virginia Center Boulevard, stay to the left and make a U-turn from the left-most left turn lane at the traffic signal on to Nutley Street South.

Tuesday, October 27, through Friday, October 30
Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West
The ramp will be closed Tuesday night, October 27, through Friday night, October 30, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. for bridge work. Traffic on the 495 Express Lanes North will be directed to I-66 East, to Route 7 (Leesburg Pike), stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal, stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.

Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24
Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 234 (Prince William Parkway) South
The ramp will be closed Friday, October 23; Saturday, October 24; Friday, October 30; and Saturday, October 31, between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. for paving operations. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) South, turn right onto Balls Ford Road, and continue about two miles west to Route 234.

Friday, October 30
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North
The ramp will be closed Friday night, October 30, between 10:30 p.m. and 8 a.m. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 28 North.

Ramp from Route 29 South to Route 28 North
The ramp will be closed Friday night, October 30, between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. Traffic will be detoured farther south to I-66 East, travel to Route 286 North, stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 28 North.

Message boards on I-66 are providing advance notice of lane closures and traffic stoppages. 

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
