FAIRFAX – Overnight lane closures are planned next week on I-66 East and West between Nutley Street and I-495 for overhead bridge work at Gallows Road. Work is over the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metrorail Station platform and I-66 West, and will require periodic brief traffic stoppages on I-66 West each night. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area and are encouraged to use alternate routes.  

Details include:

Monday, August 31, through Thursday, September 3
I-66 West from I-495 to Gallows Road

• I-66 West approaching Gallows Road will be reduced to three travel lanes from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Drivers should expect periodic brief stoppages of up to 10 minutes between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. for overhead bridge work at Gallows Road.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

I-66 East between Nutley Street and I-495

• I-66 East approaching Gallows Road will be reduced to two travel lanes from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. nightly.
• All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m.

Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West

• The ramp will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Traffic will be detoured to I-66 East, take the exit for Route 7 (Leesburg Pike), stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal, then follow signs to I-66 West.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

The Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 is being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridge is being lengthened, widened, raised, and shifted to the east to accommodate the new Express Lanes and provide room for future improvements along Gallows Road. Bridge work over the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metrorail Station platform must be done when the Orange Line is closed, as the new bridge is located directly above the Metrorail platform.
