Overnight Lane Closures and Traffic Stoppages on I-66 West and Gallows Road This Weekend and Next Week for Continued Gallows Road Bridge Beam Installation
Overnight closures of ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West
FAIRFAX – Overnight lane closures and traffic stoppages are planned on I-66 West approaching Gallows Road Friday, September 11; Saturday, September 12; and Monday, September 14, through Wednesday, September 16, as bridge beam installation continues for the new Gallows Road Bridge over I-66. Bridge beam lifts over I-66 West will require nightly traffic stoppages of up to 20 minutes on I-66 West. Work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
Additionally, Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction during overnight hours Friday, September 11; Saturday, September 12; Monday, September 14; and Tuesday, September 15. Two-way traffic will run on Gallows Road South.
Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area and are encouraged to use alternate routes.

I-66 West from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to Gallows Road
- I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane approaching Gallows Road during overnight hours Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly, and on Monday, September 14, through Wednesday, September 16, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
- Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, and weeknights between 10 p.m. and 3:30 a.m.
- All lanes will reopen by 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and by 5 a.m. weekdays.
Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West
- The ramp will be closed during overnight hours Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly, and Monday, September 14, through Wednesday, September 16, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
- Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 50 West, stay to the right to exit to Gallows Road North, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal on to Route 29 (Lee Highway) South, travel about two miles then turn right at the traffic signal on to Nutley Street North, then follow signs to I-66 West.
Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West
- The ramp will be closed during overnight hours Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly, and Monday, September 14, through Wednesday, September 16, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
- Traffic will be detoured to I-66 East, take the exit for Route 7 (Leesburg Pike), stay to the left and turn left at the light, then follow signs to I-66 West.
Gallows Road over I-66
- Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction during the overnight hours Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. nightly, and Monday, September 14, and Tuesday, September 15, from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. nightly. Two-way traffic will run on Gallows Road South during this period.
- All lanes reopen by 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and by 5:30 a.m. weekdays.
Gallows Road over I-66 is being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridge is being lengthened, widened, raised, and shifted to the east to accommodate the new Express Lanes and provide room for future improvements along Gallows Road.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
