FAIRFAX – The southbound 495 Express Lanes are scheduled to be closed during overnight hours Monday, December 14, for overhead bridge beam installation for the widening of the I-66 West bridge over I-495. There will also be overnight multi-lane closures and periodic traffic stoppages on the I-495 South general purpose lanes approaching I-66 during this period. The ramps from I-66 East and West to the southbound 495 Express Lanes will also be closed. The work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.   

Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area during these times and should consider using alternate routes.

Monday, December 14

I-495 South from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to I-66

• The I-495 South general purpose lanes will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching I-66 Monday night, December 14, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes on southbound I-495 between midnight and 4 a.m. for crews to set bridge beams into place.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

495 Express Lanes South at I-66

• The 495 Express Lanes South will be closed approaching I-66 Monday night, December 14, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Drivers will be detoured to I-66 West, take the exit for Nutley Street North, continue to the intersection with Virginia Center Boulevard, stay to the left and make a U-turn from the left-most left turn lane at the traffic signal on to Nutley Street South, and then stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to I-66 East, then follow signs to I-495 South.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from I-66 East to 495 Express Lanes South

• The ramp will be closed Monday night, December 14, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Drivers will be directed to use the I-495 South general purpose lanes.
• The ramp will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from I-66 West to 495 Express Lanes South

• The ramp will be closed Monday night, December 14, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Drivers will be directed to use the I-495 South general purpose lanes.
• The ramp will reopen by 5 a.m.

Message boards on the 495 South Express Lanes are providing advance notice of lane closures and traffic stoppages. 

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

The I-66/I-495 Interchange is being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
