CHANTILLY – The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting Thursday, Jan. 30 (if cancelled due to inclement weather, the meeting will be held Thursday, March 12) on a study of potential safety and operational improvements for nearly two miles of Route 50 (Lee Jackson Memorial Highway) between Route 28 (Sully Road) and Stringfellow Road (Route 645). The public will be able to provide input through an online survey.

The study is being completed through the Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) program, which aims to identify cost-effective measures intended to improve safety and reduce congestion.

Potential short-term improvements being studied include:

• Adding reflective traffic signal backplates
• Upgrading pedestrian ramps to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards
• Replacing and adding pavement and crosswalk markings
• Providing additional signage
• Continuing the traffic signal optimization program
• Adding pedestrian signals in the median (two-stage crossing)
• Converting bus stops to bus shelters
• Adding a Galesbury Lane and Lees Corner Road sidewalk connection 

Potential mid-term improvement options being studied include:

• Reconfiguring and modifying intersections
• Access management strategies for properties along the corridor
• Innovative intersection improvements

Stop by between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. at Brookfield Elementary School, 4200 Lees Corner Road, Chantilly, VA 20151 to learn more about the study and to provide your input. A short presentation will begin at 7 p.m., and VDOT staff will be available to answer questions.

A key part of this study is public input. Residents and travelers of the corridor in the study area are asked to take a short survey on the study website. You may also give comments at the meeting or submit them by Monday, Feb. 10 to Mr. Andrew Beacher, P.E., Virginia Department of Transportation, 4975 Alliance Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030.  

The study is scheduled for completion in summer 2020.
