Gallows Road Bridge Beam Installation Over I-66 Begins Next Weekend
Traffic stoppages nightly on I-66; Gallows Road reduced to single lane over I-66 August 22-23; Additional closures in coming weeks
FAIRFAX – Major construction work to install bridge beams for the new Gallows Road bridge over I-66 will begin Saturday, August 22, as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Work is anticipated to last approximately two weeks and will include multiple nights of traffic stoppages on I-66 and extended lane closures on Gallows Road at I-66.
Drivers should plan for delays and consider alternate routes.
The planned sequence of work and related traffic impacts is as follows:
Weekend of August 22-23:
- Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction around 11 a.m. Saturday, August 22, continuing through 8 a.m. Monday, August 24. Two-way traffic will run on the southbound side of Gallows Road during this period.
- Only one travel lane will be open on Gallows Road with a flagger to direct alternating traffic in each direction from noon Saturday, August 22, through 10 a.m. Sunday, August 23.
- Crews will lift bridge beams over I-66 East during the overnight hours.
- I-66 East will be reduced to a single travel lane each night with intermittent full traffic stoppages of up to 30 minutes between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
Week of August 23:
- Crews will lift bridge beams over the Metrorail tracks, the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metrorail Station and I-66 West.
- Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction during the overnight hours. Two-way traffic will run on the southbound side of Gallows Road during this period.
- I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane during overnight hours with intermittent full traffic stoppages. Stoppages of up to 30 minutes will occur between 10 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. nightly.
- I-66 East will be reduced to two travel lanes during overnight hours.
Week of August 30:
- Crews will lift bridge beams over I-66 West.
- Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction starting during overnight hours. Two-way traffic will run on the southbound side of Gallows Road during this period.
- I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane during overnight hours with intermittent full traffic stoppages. Stoppages of up to 30 minutes will occur between 10 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. nightly.
Gallows Road over I-66 is being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridge is being lengthened, widened, raised and shifted to the east to accommodate the new Express Lanes and provide room for future improvements along Gallows Road.

Bridge beam lifts beginning Saturday, August 22, through early September will reduce Gallows Road over I-66 to one lane in each direction many nights between 8 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., as well as from around 10 a.m. Sunday, August 23, through 8 a.m. Monday, August 24.
