Extended Daytime Lane Closures Next Week for Paving on I-66 East in Arlington for the I-66 Eastbound Widening Project

FAIRFAX – Daytime lane closures will reduce I-66 East to one travel lane between Sycamore Street and Exit 71 (Glebe Road/Fairfax Drive) in Arlington from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily next week for final paving on the I-66 Eastbound Widening Project. Extended closures are needed so that paving can occur during the daytime hours in this last section of the project, as overnight temperatures are too low to accommodate this work.

Details include:

Monday, Nov. 30, through Friday, Dec. 4: 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane for paving operations and movement of trucks between Sycamore Street and Exit 71 (Glebe Road/Fairfax Drive).

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

Drivers are urged to use caution and expect possible delays.

This work is part of the I-66 Eastbound Widening Project, which will add a travel lane along four miles of eastbound I-66 between the Dulles Connector Road and Exit 71 (Glebe Road/Fairfax Drive). The project is also building a new bridge over Lee Highway (Route 29) for the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail and constructing a new direct access ramp from eastbound I-66 to the West Falls Church Metrorail Station at the Leesburg Pike (Route 7) Interchange. The project has installed approximately 12,000 linear feet of new and replacement noise barriers. Learn more about the project at inside.transform66.org.

The additional eastbound lane, trail bridge, and Route 7 ramp connection are scheduled to open to traffic in December 2020. Learn more about the I-66 Eastbound Widening Project, and sign up for project updates and lane closure alerts at Transform66.org.
