Crews Prepared for First Winter Storm Wednesday
Drivers urged to avoid travel during the storm, closely monitor forecasts and road conditions

FAIRFAX - VDOT asks that drivers prepare to avoid travel in northern Virginia Wednesday during a major winter storm, and to closely monitor forecasts across the district for snow, ice and winds.

What's Happening Now

  • The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and Winter Storm Watch covering portions of the Northern Virginia district.
  • See the National Weather Service's Winter Storm Warning covering Loudoun County from 7 a.m. Wednesday through 4 a.m. Thursday. Heavy snow is expected with total accumulations of up to 12 inches.
  • See the Winter Storm Watch in effect for Prince William and Fairfax Counties from Wednesday morning through late Wednesday night. Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches and ice accumulations of around two tenths of an inch possible.
  • VDOT crews are pre-treating roads today to assist operations at the onset of snow. Trucks will begin staging along roads tonight, ready to plow snow and treat roads as precipitation begins.

VDOT Asks Drivers To:

  • Closely monitor weather reports for shifts in forecasts and other changes. Conditions are forecasted to vary widely across the district, with accumulations of snow, sleet, and ice expected along with the winds.
  • Make plans now to avoid travel Wednesday. Crews will be working around the clock to plow snow and to treat roads during the storm. If road conditions become hazardous, delay travel for your safety and to give crews time to clear the roads.
  • Monitor road conditions from home on www.511virginia.org, on the free mobile app, or call 511 from any phone in Virginia.
